Elgin enters bye week on Rudder loss

The Elgin Wildcats varsity football team fell 63-19 to the Rudder Rangers on the road Sept. 24.

Rudder entered the game coming off a 40-34 win over Bryan. The Rangers now hold a 4-1 record as they enter district play, while the Wildcats stand 2-3 before their bye week.

Rudder was able to establish an early lead and entered halftime with a commanding 28-9 advantage. A star performance for the Rangers came from senior quarterback Sylas Sullivan, who threw a season best 9-of-11, going 168 yards.

The third quarter saw two more Rudder touchdowns and one successful field kick from Elgin.

Wildcats senior Wyatt Cooper attempted a strike with a 55-yard pass but was caught on the 25 yard line.

Elgin scored its final points of the night from a pick-six halfway through the fourth quarter. The Rangers responded shortly after with a final rushing touchdown.

Despite the loss, the Wildcats saw improvement from their last meeting in 2023, where Rudder defeated Elgin 33-7 at home.

Halfway through the season, Elgin begins district play Oct. 8 with an away matchup against the Pflugerville Panthers.

The Panthers are split 2-2 overall, coming off a 24-19 loss to Legacy Ranch.
