More than 70 local golfers hit the links Friday morning and tallied up $11,500 for cancer research and patient support.

Teams gathered Sept. 19 for the fourth annual Elgin Relay For Life golf tournament at ShadowGlen Golf Club. Seventy- four golfers competed in the four-person scramble event, with 20 local businesses, families and organizations sponsoring the community tournament.

“Most of us have been affected by cancer,” said Christina Johnson, a Relay For Life volunteer. “Almost everyone has friends or relatives who were taken too soon. This way, we get to be a part of the solution.”

The tournament began in 2021 at ShadowGlen before moving to ColoVista Golf Club in Bastrop for two years. This year, organizers opted to return to the Manor greens for a familiar showing.

“We’ve had a good experience at ShadowGlen and it feels like home here,” said volunteer Ruth Hyatt.

Groups of four took part in the 18-hole scramble, with each team counting its lowest score per hole. Some teams had a player who didn’t show up, but still managed to compete with three, according to volunteer Michelle Burns.

“The goal is to have fun while raising funds to fight cancer,” she said.

Johnson, who has attended all but one Elgin Relay For Life tournament, said her favorite part is the community, as it “brings so many people together for a good cause.”

Event sponsors included Anytime Fitness, Callahan Electric, Bluebonnet Electric, Booker T. Washington Elementary School, Café 290, Chick-Fil-A Manor, Covert ATX, Elgin Breeding Service, Elgin Courier, Elgin Fertilizer, Elgin Funeral Home, Elgin General Store, Fixes and Fences, Frontier Bank, G&L Farms, Jeannette Shelby Realty and several families and community members who donated in memory of loved ones.
