The Elgin Wildcats varsity football team suffered a 48-0 loss to the Montgomery Bears on Friday, Sept. 12.

The defeat marked Elgin’s second consecutive shutout after a 42-0 loss to Anderson the previous week.

Montgomery struck first with a 50-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead with nine minutes left in the first quarter. The Bears added a 13-yard rushing touchdown late in the period to extend the advantage to 14-0.

The second quarter belonged to Montgomery, which scored 17 unanswered points on a rushing touchdown, a field goal and another passing score to build a 31-0 halftime lead. Elgin’s defense struggled to contain the Bears’ ground game, allowing 272 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Montgomery also threw for 166 yards and two scores.

The Wildcats were outscored 17-0 in the second half despite a few redzone opportunities that failed to produce points. Senior Jeremiah Nicholson made his first start at quarterback as Elgin continues to search for consistency at the position.

The Wildcats dropped to 0-3 on the season and will open district play at home against McCallum on Friday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m.
