Officials enacted an emergency burn ban order last week prohibiting most forms of outdoor fires in unincorporated parts of Bastrop County, citing heightened wildfire risk and public safety concerns.
The order, filed Sept. 17 by County Judge Gregory Klaus, determined “extraordinary measures” are needed to protect local lives and property, according to court records. The ban makes it illegal to ignite or cause ignition of combustible or vegetative materials outdoors. Violations could result in a class C misdemeanor, punishable by fines up to $500. The order applies only to unincorporated areas not under public ownership or stewardship.
Exceptions include welding, cutting and grinding operations, provided fires are accidental and proper safety precautions are in place.
Reports show Bastrop County experienced its 53rd driest August on record this year, with rainfall nearly an inch below average.
Residents are urged to comply with the order until the ban is lifted.
UPDATE
County commissioners reevaluated the burn ban after press time Wednesday, Sept. 24, and approved extending the notice.
