Something “unexpected” happened for Elgin High School seniors Mya Campuzano and Drake McCoy Friday evening.
The pair were crowned queen and king of Elgin’s 2025-26 Homecoming Court in a pregame ceremony at Wildcat Stadium Sept. 19. Despite being on the royal ballot, both said they were surprised to hear their names announced.
“It’s crazy. I honestly didn’t expect to win,” McCoy said. “There are so many other people who deserved it as well, but I’m so happy that I was able to actually get it. It’s amazing.”
McCoy, an offensive lineman for the Wildcats, was in uniform when he accepted his crown. Campuzano aids the varsity team as a student trainer, but donned a formal dress for the occasion.
“I’m very blessed and thankful that I won, and to have this opportunity,” Campuzano said. “I didn’t expect to hear my name called.”
Beyond their work with the football program, the two are active across campus. Campuzano plays in the band and will return to the pitch this spring for the Lady Wildcats soccer team, while McCoy participates in drama club and powerlifting.
“I love my football team and my brothers who are with us all the time,” McCoy said. “To be Homecoming King is truly a blessing from the Lord.”
The night ended with a bittersweet turn, as their beloved Wildcats dropped their Homecoming game to Austin McCallum 45-14.
