Volunteers halt repeat burn

SMITHVILLE — Fire crews from Smithville Volunteer Fire Department and Heart of the Pines Fire Department teamed up Sept. 14 to contain a 1.5-acre brush fire west of the city.

The blaze broke out in a deep ravine near an AT&T cellphone tower on Dump Ground Road, close to Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Personnel said the same location caught fire a few years ago.

The mutual-aid response was dispatched about 1:55 p.m., and firefighters stopped the burn’s forward progress within 30 minutes. Officials said it was the largest of three callouts for Smithville crews that day.

A Texas Forest Service dozer was requested to assist with containment but was called off about 2:20 p.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
