Sheriff’s Office warns of cop impersonator

The Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a man impersonating a law enforcement officer following two reported incidents near Red Rock and Rockne.

According to an Oct. 15 social media post, the first report occurred near FM 20 and Walter Hoffman Road, where a man driving a black Dodge Durango pulled over a driver, ordered them out and took personal belongings.

Authorities also said a second person reported a similar encounter.

“Of the encounters we have heard about there has been no violence and no indication the subject is armed,” Sheriff Maurice Cook said in the post.

The SUV is described as having a brush guard, dark-tinted windows, no license plate and a red-and-blue light bar on the dashboard.

The driver was dressed entirely in black, wearing tactical-style pants, leader gloves and a ski mask covering his face.

Authorities are urging anyone who encounters a vehicle or person matching the description to call 911.

The sheriff acknowledged that state law requires drivers to pull over for cars displaying red and blue lights but said drivers should consider their personal safety.

“We cannot give any instructions to disregard the state law,” Cook said. “However, you be the judge if your safety is in jeopardy.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Bastrop County dispatch at 512-303-7000.
