The Elgin Wildcat varsity football team defeated the Liberal Arts & Science Academy Raptors 48-0 on Friday, Oct. 16, marking their first blowout victory since the 2024 season.
This was the first recorded meeting between the two programs, with the Raptors holding a 0-7 overall record coming off a 19-12 defeat by Navarro the week prior.
“We're definitely getting better,” said head coach Richard Lucero. “Now it's just a matter of getting consistent with our practice habits and the way that we approach game week as a whole.”
Freshman running-back JC Keller and senior wide-receiver Brandon Sorrells picked up two touchdowns each after passes by sophomore quarterback Tanner Modesette.
“Tanner has been through a lot and has grown a lot,” said Lucero. “He was thrust into a difficult situation of playing for varsity after playing in only three varsity games last season but now he deserves recognition because he will be our quarterback for the next few years.”
Elgin is now 3-4 overall and 1-1 for district play, holding the fourth spot on district rankings.
The Wildcats will return home after seven consecutive road meetings to play their first home game of the season, hosting the Crockett Cougars for homecoming on Friday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
“It’s very exciting” said Lucero. “The stadium's been renovated, the press box has been innovated, we got a new scoreboard so we're looking forward to all of that. It's going to be a great evening for us.”
The Cougars are currently 3-4 overall and split 1-1 for district, coming off their own blowout victory over Navarro.
