ELGIN WILDCATS 15, DEL VALLE CARDINALS 7
The Elgin Wildcats clenched a 15-7 victory during their road game against the Del Valle Cardinals Sept 18.
Elgin now holds a 2-2 record and will play the Rudder Rangers Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. at Rudder High School. Head coach Rich Lucero said the team faced a lot of adversity during Friday’s match, and though it came down to the wire, the Wildcats held strong on defense.
“Our weekly theme was together and that really came to fruition for this game,” Lucero said.
The Wildcats scored the first and only points in the first quarter with a successful field goal.
Del Valle answered in the second with a defensive interception returned 25 yards for a touchdown. Elgin sophomore quarterback Tanner Modesette responded two minutes later with a 3-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Andre Simmons, giving the Wildcats a 9-7 lead heading into halftime.
Neither team was able to find success in the third quarter, and Elgin finished out the night with a final touchdown by junior Hamilton Hodges from Modesette early in the fourth.
Modesette has totaled 223 passing yards on 12 completions over four games this season.
“We do see a lot of upside in him,” Lucero said. “He’s got a great attitude and his work ethic is good.”
Del Valle now holds a 0-4 record and will begin district play in two weeks against Akins High School. In their previous meeting, the visiting Cardinals triumphed 27-20 over the Eagles during their final district game of the season.
This week’s meeting with Rudder will be the Wildcats’ fifth of seven consecutive road matches. The Rangers hold a 3-1 record, coming into the match with a 40-34 victory over Bryan High School.
“Rudder is doing some really good things this season, and this will be by far our biggest challenge of the year,” Lucero said.
