The Elgin Wildcats tennis team opened the season with a 10-9 victory over Del Valle Aug. 21, christening the program’s new facilities with a win in front of a home crowd.
Seniors Bryan Lopez and Muhammad Nihal won their doubles match before each adding a singles victory. Sophomore captain Easton Crunk also teamed with senior Nico Munoz to take a mixed doubles match before closing out an 8-6 singles win to help secure the victory.
Head coach Daryl Remschel, in his 31st year leading the program, said the new setting made the opener memorable.
“This was a great way to open our new facilities,” Remschel said. “It was great to see parents, siblings, coaches and other students being able to come and watch their Wildcat here in Elgin. I am hoping that the new facilities will help the program to continue to grow in the future.”
Elgin has 28 players in the program this season, its largest roster since at least 2020.
The Wildcats are scheduled to play five home matches this fall, opening district play at Georgetown High School Sept. 1.
A matchup with Cedar Creek Aug. 27 was cancelled due to lightning and will not be rescheduled, officials said.
