Dove season lands with record highs

Texas dove hunters head into the 2026 season with record bird populations and strong habitat conditions following three straight years of significant spring rainfall.

The regular dove season in Central Texas opened Sept. 1 and runs through Oct. 25, resuming Dec. 11 through Jan. 14. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologists estimate the mourning dove population at 36.7 million birds and the whitewinged dove population at 12.9 million, both at record highs.

August heat and limited rainfall are pushing birds toward water sources, making watering holes productive early-season locations. Officials recommend scouting dove movement throughout the day and focusing on native food sources such as sunflowers or croton, or recently combined agricultural fields like corn.

Texas leads the nation in dove hunting, accounting for 32% of the national mourning dove harvest and 87% of white-winged dove harvest annually. More than 300,000 hunters participate each season, generating more than $500 million in economic activity.

All dove hunters must carry a valid hunting license, a Migratory Game Bird Endorsement and HIP certification. Anyone born after Sept. 1, 1971, must complete a hunter education course before hunting in Texas. TPWD said the most common violations during dove season are lacking hunter education certification and the Migratory Game Bird Endorsement.

With New World screwworm detected in Texas, hunters are encouraged to inspect dogs for wounds before leaving the field and report suspicious wounds or larvae to a veterinarian. More information is available by calling the Texas Animal Health Commission at 1-800-550-8242.
