The Lady Wildcats varsity volleyball team swept Taylor Aug. 18 before going 3-5 at the Bastrop Classic over the weekend.
Elgin picked up a dominant 3-0 win over the Lady Ducks, handling Taylor 25-21, 25-20 and 25-13. That consistency dipped, however, during tournament play.
The Lady Cats opened the classic with five straight losses, falling to Boswell, Industrial, La Grange, Bastrop and Boswell again, all by 2-0 scores.
Despite the stacking defeats, Elgin recovered and showed fight in the final games of the tournament. The girls bounced back for wins over Taylor (2-0), Manor (2-0) and Del Valle (2-1).
The strong finish marked an improvement over last season, when Elgin went winless in the same tournament.
The Lady Cats entered Tuesday’s match against Cedar Creek with an 11-8 record.
Elgin will host the Wildcat Classic this weekend at Elgin High School.
