A volleyball coach who was recently hired by the Bastrop Independent School District to serve as the head coach at Cedar Creek will no longer be employed by the district after her arrest on a charge of having an improper relationship with a student.
BreAnn Halcumb, 34, was arrested June 1 in Carthage on a second-degree felony charge, according to arrest records. Halcumb, who previously coached at Universal City Randolph just outside of San Antonio, was arrested on a warrant out of Bexar County.
"The district became aware of information that had not been disclosed during the selection process,” Bastrop ISD Superintendent Dr. Kristi Lee said in the statement. “Upon learning this information, district administration immediately reviewed the matter and took appropriate action. As a result, the individual will not be joining Bastrop ISD.”
Bastrop ISD announced Halcumb as Cedar Creek High School's new head volleyball coach on April 27. She also participated in a meet-the-coach event for the Cedar Creek community and Bastrop ISD athletic boosters on May 18.
District officials did not provide additional details regarding the hiring process or when they became aware of the information related to Halcumb's arrest. The charge remains pending.
