The Lady Wildcats varsity softball team picked up its first district win in a 16-12 shootout against Pflugerville March 13, shutting down a Panthers comeback late in the game.

With Elgin holding a narrow 12-10 lead after Pflugerville mounted a 10-run deficit, head coach Jodi Paige Williams made a pivotal decision to pinch-hit freshman Elizabeth Anderson for junior Katelyn Anderson. The move paid off as the sub delivered a two-RBI single to extend the Lady Cats’ lead to 14-10 and give Elgin some breathing room.

Senior Bianca Galindo also had a big night at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, including a two-run home run.

Elgin jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning by taking advantage of two walks and two-hit batters to go up 4-0.

The Lady Cats added two more in the second after an error allowed both runners to score, pushing the lead to 6-0.

Pflugerville responded in the third inning with two runs on a double and a single to cut the deficit to four, but Elgin answered with a massive third inning. The team scored four runs on two singles and multiple errors to take an eightpoint lead. Elgin capped the inning when Trinity Martinez laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring in another run and make it 11-2 heading into the fourth.

Galindo had an RBI triple in the fourth to extend the team’s lead to 12-2.

The Panthers began their comeback attempt in the fifth inning, scoring eight runs on five straight singles and a walk to quickly close the gap to 12-10.

After Elizabeth Anderson eased the tension with her clutch hit, Galindo added insurance in the sixth inning with a two-run home run. Pflugerville scored two more runs in the top of the seventh, but Elgin held on for the final 16-12 score.

Katelyn Anderson got the win, throwing 4.1 innings, giving up 10 runs with four strikeouts.

Elgin took on Pflugerville Connally March 16 and looked to be in good form, securing another 17-3 win. The girls faced East View after press time Tuesday and will meet Marble Falls March 24.
