BASTROP — The Bastrop Bears boys varsity soccer team opened district play last week in impressive fashion, holding both Cedar Creek and Navarro scoreless while netting a combined six of their own.
Bastrop continued its strong defensive play against Cedar Creek Jan. 27, recording a 2-0 shutout of the Eagles.
Both goals came in the first half, with sophomore Franklin Gutierrez- Martinez and junior Gail Ramirez finding the back of the net. Ramirez also recorded an assist, while freshman goalkeeper Gavin Meraz made five saves for the clean sheet.
The Bears followed with an even more dominant performance against Navarro Jan. 30, posting a 4-0 sweep of the Vikings.
Sophomore Isaac Velazquez, Hernandez and Martinez each scored, while Velazquez, Hernandez and senior Leonardo Rivera Aldaco added assists. Meraz again finished with five saves in goal.
The win marked Bastrop’s fifth shutout of the season, improving to 10-1-1 overall and 2-0 in district play. The Bears faced Liberal Arts & Science Academy after press time Monday and will host Crockett on Friday, Feb. 6, at 7:45 p.m.
