The Wildcats enjoyed a strong start on the pitch, opening play with a convincing 5-1 win over the Austin Brave Eagles. The game marked Elgin’s highest-scoring performance of the season and set the tone for the remainder of the weekend.

Elgin followed with a hardfought 1-0 win over Temple in a defensive battle that featured strong organization on the back line and timely goalkeeping.

The boys roster closed tournament action with another offensive showing, defeating El Campo 5-3 in a fast-paced, high-scoring match.

With the results, Elgin improved to 7-1-1 on the season.

The Wildcats hosted Brenham after press time Tuesday and will continue district preparation when they host Buda Hays at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16.

The Bears also showcased impressive play in their home games, finishing the tournament 3- 0-1. Bastrop opened with a 2-1 victory over Northeast Early College, as junior Angel Chavez Hernandez and sophomore Eduardo Luviano Perez each scored in the first half to give the Bears an early advantage.

The Bears followed with a dominant 4-1 win over El Campo before battling Manor New Tech to a scoreless draw in a tightly contested match. Bastrop finished the weekend with another 4-1 win, this time over Austin Brave, scoring twice in each half.

Bastrop will return to action Friday, Jan. 16, when the Bears travel to East View to continue their early-season slate.

While Elgin and Bastrop did not face each other during the tournament, the two teams are scheduled to meet at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Elgin High School.
