Boys tally record 94 points; Lady Bears reverse winless season

The Bastrop Bears varsity basketball teams opened district play with a set of wins, as the boys rolled past Austin Navarro and the Lady Bears picked up back-to-back victories last week.

BOYS

The Bears exploded for a season- high 94 points against the Vikings Jan. 2, who were held to just 34.

Five Bastrop athletes placed in double figures, led by junior guard Diego Rangel with 25 points on 11of-17 shooting.

Senior forward Brent Carter added 20 points, while junior Ryder Alvarez finished with 16. Junior forward Preston Alexander contributed 14 points, and junior Jaxson Spotts chipped in 10.

The Bears shot 45% from the field.

One of the most telling statistics came in ball control, as Bastrop committed just four total turnovers in the game. Defensively, the Bears also turned in one of their strongest performances of the season, holding Navarro to its second-lowest point total. Bastrop controlled the glass with 42 rebounds and forced 20 steals, creating numerous fastbreak opportunities.

The win improved Bastrop to 10-13 overall and 1-0 in district play.

The boys traveled to Liberty Arts & Science Academy after press time Tuesday and will host Crockett at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9.

GIRLS

The Lady Bears found some momentum to build off of and earned their first wins of the season after a tough 0-10 start.

Bastrop controlled its district opener against Cedar Creek, outscoring the Eagles 17-10 in the first quarter and taking a 16-point lead into halftime. The Lady Bears’ defense shut out Cedar Creek in the third quarter and allowed just one point in the fourth.

That defensive effort carried over into a 51-14 win over Navarro in their second district contest.

Bastrop again limited scoring in the second half, only allowing single- digit points.

The Lady Bears hosted Liberty Arts & Science Academy on Tuesday and will travel to Crockett at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2.
