AUSTIN — The Bastrop Bears varsity basketball team earned a 60-40 road victory over the Travis Rebels on Dec. 19 at Travis High School.
Senior forward Brent Carter led the Bears with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting, setting the tone early with a 3-pointer to give Bastrop a 3-2 lead in the opening minutes.
Bastrop quickly gained control of the game, stretching its advantage to double digits midway through the first quarter. A fast-break layup by Ryden Alvarez, followed by five consecutive points from Jamarion Aldridge Hopes, fueled a 14-4 run that put the Bears firmly in command.
The Bears maintained steady offensive pressure throughout the second quarter and broke the game open in the third. A 3-pointer from Diego Rangel capped a strong stretch and extended Bastrop’s lead to 3820, its largest margin of the night.
Travis attempted to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, but Bastrop remained composed and responded defensively to halt any momentum. The Bears closed out the game with disciplined execution on both ends of the floor to secure the 20-point win.
Bastrop was efficient offensively, shooting 52% from the field, while its aggressive defense created numerous transition opportunities. The Bears recorded 12 steals, many of which turned into fast-break points.
Two other Bears reached double figures in scoring, with Hopes finishing with 11 points and junior forward Preston Alexander adding 10.
The win marked Bastrop’s second consecutive victory, following a 71-45 win over Taylor on Dec. 12. The Bears improved to 7-11 overall on the season.
Bastrop competed in the Buda Hays Tournament on Dec. 29-30 and will return to action Jan. 2, when it hosts Navarro at 2 p.m.
