Both the Elgin girls and boys varsity basketball teams dropped their matchups against the Georgetown Eagles on Friday, Dec. 19.

The Lady Cats struggled offensively in a 54-14 loss, turning the ball over repeatedly and having difficulty finding consistent scoring opportunities. Elgin recorded one of its lowest point totals of the season, allowing Georgetown to pull away early and maintain control throughout the game.

Despite the loss, junior Roy’L Brown has continued to be a bright spot for the Lady Cats, leading the team with an average of 13 points per game this season. The loss dropped Elgin to 7-17 overall and 0-3 in District play.

Elgin looked to regroup earlier this week against Bellville and will return to action Jan. 6, when it hosts Pflugerville at 7 p.m.

The Elgin boys had more success offensively, but were unable to keep pace with Georgetown, falling 59-42 in the district opener. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Wildcats.

Elgin competed defensively and showed fight throughout the contest but struggled to generate enough consistent offense to match the Eagles’ scoring runs. Georgetown capitalized on key stretches to create separation, particularly in the second half.

The Wildcats used the Hays Tournament on Dec. 29-30 as an opportunity to bounce back and gain experience against strong competition. Elgin will return to district play Jan. 6, when it travels to Pflugerville for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
