SMITHVILLE — The Elgin varsity girls basketball team went 2-2 at the Smithville Tournament over the weekend, holding steady with an 8-12 overall record.
Tournament action for the Lady Wildcats began with a 55-41 loss to Crockett, but a strong performance and balanced offensive effort evened their record in a 49-46 win over Rockdale. Elgin pushed through a low-scoring defensive battle to pull off a 33-32 victory against host Smithville, highlighted by timely stops and lategame execution, before falling 44-24 to Marion in the tournament closer.
Junior guard Roy’L Brown continues to lead the Lady Cats, averaging 13 points per game this season while adding six rebounds and 2.8 steals per contest. Brown’s all-around play has helped anchor Elgin on both ends of the floor and earn a recent Austin High School Player of the Week nomination.
In district play, Elgin dropped its opener 64-24 with a tough Hendrickson matchup Dec. 9.
The Lady Wildcats returned to action after press time Tuesday against Weiss and will travel to Georgetown Friday, Dec. 19, for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
