The Wildcats varsity football team toughed through a season slated for rebuilding and ended on a high note last weekend.

Elgin closed out its schedule Nov. 7 with a dominant 63-14 victory over the Navarro Vikings. The Wildcats finished their season with a 2-8 overall record and 2-5 mark in district play under first-year head coach Rich Lucero.

Elgin struck early in its final test, as senior utility player Michael Mejias returned the opening kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown. The Vikings briefly tied the game before sophomore running back Dae’Ron Traylor helped the Wildcats break away with a 10-yard touchdown run.

Moments later, senior linebacker Matthew Clear recovered a fumble and allowed freshman quarterback Tanner Modesette to capitalize with a 50-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Andre Simmons.

Elgin continued to pour it on, recovering another fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Senior running back Jerimiah Nicholson capped the short drive with a rushing touchdown for a 28-7 lead in the first eight minutes.

Junior utility player Trey Flores opened the second quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run, and the Wildcats once again recovered the kickoff, setting up at the Navarro 15-yard line. Nicholson scored his second touchdown of the night on a 3-yard sweep.

The Wildcats’ defense added to the rout. Senior safety Nathan Perkins intercepted a pass and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown, sending Elgin into halftime with a 49-7 lead.

With a running clock in the second half, the Wildcats tacked on two more rushing touchdowns — one each from Flores and Modesette — to close out the game and Elgin’s 2025-26 season.
