Eight score in Bastrop’s 71-0 rout of Navarro

BASTROP — The Bastrop Bears (7-0, 4-0 in district) had more to celebrate this Homecoming after maintaining their perfect slate in a commanding 71-0 shutout over the Navarro Vikings (1-6, 0-4 in district) Friday night.

Eight players on the Bears’ diverse offensive roster scored in the blowout victory Oct. 17. Senior tight end Brent Carter led the way with four receptions for 83 yards and three touchdowns.

Junior quarterback Weston Nielsen opened the scoring with a 34yard touchdown pass to Carter. He found him again in the second quarter with a 33-yard strike and added his third score before halftime.

Nielsen finished the game with 151 passing yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Through the season, he has thrown for 1,946 yards and 28 touchdowns.

Backup quarterback Jackson Phillips saw playing time in the second half and connected with senior Andrew Carter for a 20yard touchdown.

Senior utility player Gary Jefferson powered the ground game with 63 yards and three rushing touchdowns. Junior running back Iziah Regaldo added 77 yards and a score, while seniors Bryce Cosgrove and Kory Evans each reached the end zone.

Bastrop’s defense recorded its first shutout of the season, keeping Navarro scoreless and limiting offensive chances throughout the night.

The Bears have now scored at least 60 points in each of their district games, averaging more than 65 points per contest during that stretch.

Bastrop will travel to Elgin Friday, Oct. 24, for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
