Sophia Taylor, a seventh grader at Elgin Middle School, earned a platinum award—the top 10%—at the Junior Visual Art Scholastic Event earlier this month for her piece titled “Treehouse Memories.” Taylor was one of seven EMS students who competed in the statewide competition, with four attending in person. Fellow student Flor Olvera Zavaleta, an eighth grader, received a gold award for her piece “The Death Lily and Tree.” Both earned the highest honors available in their respective JrVASE contests. EMS art teachers Rebecca Core, Anna Kirschner and Eilene Galvan were recognized by Elgin Independent School District leaders for supporting the students.
