I’ve a feeling we’re not in Austin anymore
I’ve a feeling we’re not in Austin anymore
It was 2010 when I moved from Austin to Elgin. One of the first things I noticed was how much people wave to each other here. I remember driving down Avenue C as a newly settled Elginite, seeing someone standing on the side of the road waving. As I approached, I realized it was someone I knew. That had never happened to me before in Austin. If anyone ever waved at me from the side of the road, they weren’t using all five fingers. 08/02/2023 12:00 AM

The community had good music
The community had good music
In its heyday (the 1920s and 30s) the Elgin American Legion Band was very active giving many concerts locally and out-of-town. People flocked to hear live music concerts for entertainment. As the public schools provided so little music training, the all-male band had to seek other training. The Swedish communities provided some, some coming from immigrants trained in Sweden. One Swedish immigrant, Albert Smith, was able to go to a Swedish college in Lindsborg, Kansas. He studied music there and came back to the Kimbro community and started training some of the younger men. One student, Arthur Swenson, became a fine trumpet player. Smith also trained others in brass instrumentation. 07/26/2023 12:00 AM
Take, Eat, and Be Satisfied
Take, Eat, and Be Satisfied
In Mark 8:1-9, The four thousand people had been faithfully listening to Jesus for three days with nothing to eat. Their devotion really puts us to shame, doesn’t it? We give up an hour or two a week and think about Sunday dinner in the meantime, and they had gone three days without food! But their feast was the greatest kind, for they had been feasting on the Bread of Life, the Word of God from the lips of Jesus, so they had already received food that satisfies the soul and brings eternal life. But they still needed to eat regular food too, so Jesus has compassion on the crowd. And this compassion is not just an attitude of pity but actually accomplishes something. Jesus shows mercy to the crowd with a feeding miracle. 07/26/2023 12:00 AM
