Elgin loses first home game

The Elgin Wildcat varsity football team closed out their homecoming week with a close 31-24 defeat by the Crockett Cougars on Friday, Oct. 23.

With the Wildcat stadium having undergone a recent remodel, this was Elgin’s first time playing at home after seven consecutive road games.

This is a change from their meeting last season, where Elgin visited and defeated Crockett 70-26.

The Wildcats alternated control, holding a lead three times throughout the game and outpacing Crockett 7-0 in the first quarter.

The Cougars picked up 20 points over Elgin in the second quarter, holding a narrow 20-14 lead going into halftime. The two teams split scoring 3-3 in the third quarter, with a five-yard pass in the fourth quarter pushing Elgin into a 24-23 lead.

Crockett responded in the final two minutes with a 3-yard rushing touchdown and a successful two-point conversion, finalizing the Elgin defeat at 31-24.

The Wildcats are now 3-5 overall and 1-2 for district, holding the fourth spot on district rankings.

Elgin will play its final road game of the season against the Bastrop Bears on Friday, Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. Last season, Bastrop visited and defeated the Wildcats 62-6.

The Bears currently maintain a 4-4 overall record and a perfect 3-0 record, placing them first on district rankings. Bastrop will enter the meeting riding a 65-0 blowout victory over the Navarro Vikings.
