Elgin sophomore cross country runner Erik Trevino and freshman Ma’Kiah Hodges finished in the top 10 at the 23-5A District Cross Country meet in Georgetown on Thursday, October 15.
These performances qualified both runners for the regional meet taking place in Huntsville from Oct. 26-27. The top 10 qualifiers from regionals will advance to the state meet on Nov. 7 in Round Rock.
“It would be amazing for either one of these young folks to qualify,” said Elgin boys cross country coach Alvis Prince. “We’ve got everybody signed back for next year, so the future is looking amazing already.”
Out of the four Wildcats who competed in the varsity boys 5000meter run, Trevino finished third overall with personal record of 16:18.00. He is ranked eighth in district standings. This performance comes after Trevino was selected as the Elgin High School Male Student Athlete of the month for September.
Five Lady Wildcats competed in the varsity girls 5000-meter run, with Hodges finishing seventh overall and led the girls’ squad with a time of 20:31.00.
“That was literally the first full 5K she has run,” said Prince. “She’s been running junior varsity, so her future is really bright.”
Overall, the Wildcat cross country team finished fourth overall with a combined 104 points. This was the final fullteam meet of the season.
