Elgin Wildcat varsity football was stifled offensively by the Pflugerville Panthers, falling 62-7 on the road Thursday, Oct. 8.
The Wildcats have only recently begun to struggle against Pflugerville, falling 55-20 in their meeting last season after narrowly defeating the Panthers 38-35 in 2024.
“These are growing pains,” said head coach Richard Lucero. “There’s still a vision and plan in place, but this was a reality of where we’re at as a program and where we need to get it to.”
Elgin senior wide-receiver Brandon Sorrells had three receptions and went 110 yards on 15 attempts. Sophomore quarterback Tanner Modesette picked up the lone touchdown for the Wildcats, throwing for -1 yard and completing 8 of 19 attempts.
The Panthers jumped ahead by the first half, leading 41-7 by halftime. They tacked on 21 additional points across the second half, finishing the night with a 62-7 victory over Elgin.
Elgin is now 2-4 overall and 0-1 for district play, placing them fourth on the rankings.
Lucero holds high hopes for the remainder of the season, placing great importance on maintaining simplicity for his team.
“We’re cleaning up some things and just stripping it down to the most fundamental things that we can,” said Lucero. “As we’re looking at these last few games, just getting back to basics. If we do that and we play clean football, I think we’re going to come out with a win.”
The Wildcats will travel for their seventh consecutive road game to take on the Liberal Arts Science Academy Raptors on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
The Raptors hold a 0-6 overall record, coming off a close 19-12 loss at Navarro.
