Police: Chain-reaction accident, death started with attempt to miss cyclist

BASTROP — A pickup swerving to avoid a stationary cyclist on the side of the road led to a multi-vehicle collision that killed a 66-year-old motorist and sent several others to area hospitals, police said.

According to the Bastrop Police Department, the tragic episode occurred at 6:10 a.m. Oct. 6 on FM 969 at Blakey Drive.

Investigators said the sequence of mishaps began when a juvenile driving a Dodge Ram traveling south on 969 swerved into oncoming traffic to avoid a man stopped on the improved shoulder while adjusting his bicycle chain.

The Dodge Ram was involved in a collision with a Nissan Rogue traveling north, according to police reports.

The Nissan then struck a fence and ended up in a pasture, according to officers.

A Subaru headed north also was in a collision with the Dodge Ram, according to a statement from the Police Department.

The 66-year-old man driving the Nissan suffered fatal injuries, the statement indicated.

His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

A passenger in the Nissan was taken to an Austin hospital after being hurt, investigators said.

According to police, the driver of the Dodge Ram and the operator of the Subaru were rushed to a local medical facility for treatment of their injuries.

The male who was adjusting his bicycle chain was not injured, according to the statement.

The incident remains under investigation.
