Elgin Wildcats varsity football is halfway through its 2026 season, sporting a 2-3 record as district play begins this Friday. The Wildcats finished pre-district play on a sour note, falling 63-19 to Rudder on Sept. 24 in their fifth straight road game.

Elgin opened its season on a similar tone, traveling to play Manor on Aug. 28. It was the first meeting between the two teams in a decade, with the Mustangs taking down the Wildcats 30-14.

The Wildcats have struggled to find consistency, alternating between a win and a loss each week.

Their first victory came in the second week, defeating Northeast Early College 63-7. Two weeks later, Elgin then defeated Del Valle 15-7 in their first meeting since the Cardinals took down the Wildcats 20-7 in 2009. So far this season, the Wildcats have picked up 883 passing yards and 432 rushing yards with a completion rate of .445%. Sophomore starting quarterback Tanner Modesette has gone 57 for 126, picking up five touchdowns and a QB rating of 72.3%.

To open district competition, Elgin will stay on the road to take on Pflugerville Panthers on Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. In their previous meeting, the Wildcats fell to Pflugerville 55-20 in a mid-season road match.

The Panthers are currently 2-3 heading into district competition, coming off a 28-13 loss by Ellison prior to a bye week.
