Elgin ISD campuses cleared after reported threat

Elgin ISD campuses cleared after reported threat

Elgin Independent School District campuses lifted a lockdown Monday afternoon after police signaled an all-clear following a warning of possible violence, officials said.

The threat, which may have involved a gun, was deemed not credible and no students or staff were in danger, officers said.

The Elgin Police Department notified Elgin ISD about the threat at 12:40 p.m., according to reports.

District and campus leaders then worked with officers to secure the schools, with classes resuming at 2:20 p.m.

But credible or not, those making threats — even if joking — could face school discipline and even criminal charges, officials said.

“I want to be clear about the seriousness of incidents of this nature,” Superintendent Christopher Bailey said. “Anyone, regardless of age, who creates or shares a threat can be arrested for and charged with making a terroristic threat.”

Bailey reminded students to speak up if they see something.
