Drunk driver hits gas station, injures 1

ELGIN POLICE:

An Elgin woman was arrested earlier this month after injuring a person inside the gas station police said she drove her vehicle into.

Erin Sweetser Smith, 60, was taken into custody about 9 p.m. Jan. 2 by Elgin Police Department officers following a crash at the Shell gas station at 503 N. Main St. Officers were dispatched after receiving reports a vehicle struck the building.

Authorities said one person inside the gas station was injured and transported to an area hospital.

An investigation determined Smith was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, police said. She was arrested and charged with intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury, a third-degree felony.

As of press time, Smith remained in the Bastrop County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond.
