An 18-year-old Elgin man was found shot to death early Tuesday, and a 17-year-old has been charged with murder, police said.

Officers responded about 3:30 a.m. to a home in the 100 block of Jefferson Cove, where they found Jowell Wallace, 18, dead inside the residence, according to the Elgin Police Department.

Police said Sherrod and Wallace were acquaintances and described the shooting as an isolated incident.

Sherrod appeared before Elgin Municipal Judge Amanda Carter for magistration within 48 hours of his arrest, where he was read his rights and his bond verdict was set, records show.

The case marks Elgin’s second homicide of 2025. On Feb. 11, Charles and Sirley Cunningham were killed in what officials described as a murder-suicide.
