McDade earns first district win, others split

VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP

It was a rough start to district play for the Mc-Dade Bulldogs, but they found their footing Saturday with a hard-fought win at Bartlett.

McDade (6-9, 1-4 in District 27-2A) earned its first league victory with a 3-1 win, taking the match by scores of 25-20, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-17.

“Every player gave it their all and contributed,” McDade Independent School District representative said in a social media post. “The team’s heart, spirit and unity were on full display.”

Brianna Briones, Leah Chavez and Avery Grier were named Players of the Match.

Briones kept the offense flowing with relentless hustle and amazing sets, according to the district. Chavez displayed endurance with powerful hits in key moments, and Grier backed McDade defensively to keep the ball alive and her team energized.

McDade hosted Holland after press time Tuesday. The Bulldogs visit Granger at 2 p.m. Saturday and host Milano at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14.

ELGIN

The Lady Cats fell 3-0 at home to Pflugerville Hendrickson on Friday at Elgin High School.

Scores and statistics were unavailable.

Elgin (7-23, 1-6 in District 23-5A) hosted Pflugerville Weiss late Tuesday. The Lady Cats host Georgetown at 6 p.m. Thursday and visit Pflugerville at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14.

BASTROP

The Lady Bears split a pair of District 24-5A matches last week.

Bastrop (25-11, 6-2) edged Austin McCallum 3-2 on Tuesday, Sept. 30, before falling 3-1 at Austin Ann Richards on Friday.

The scores in the Mc-Callum win were 2518, 25-27, 25-23, 20-25 and 15-5. Scores from the Ann Richards match were unavailable.

The Lady Bears hosted Cedar Creek on Tuesday and will welcome Austin Navarro at 7 p.m. Friday. They will visit Austin Liberal Arts and Science Academy at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14.

CEDAR CREEK

The Eagles dropped both of their District 24-5A matches at home last week, losing 3-0 to Austin Ann Richards Tuesday, Sept. 30, and 3-0 to Austin Crockett on Friday.

In the Crockett match, Cedar Creek fell 25-19, 26-24 and 25-21. Scores were unavailable from the Ann Richards match.

Cedar Creek visited Bastrop on Tuesday. The Eagles play at Austin Anderson at 6:30 p.m. Friday and at Austin Mc-Callum at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14.

SMITHVILLE

The Lady Tigers split a pair of District 22-4A contests last week.

Smithville (7-13, 1-3) defeated Giddings 3-1 at home Tuesday, Sept. 30, before falling 3-1 at La Grange on Friday.

Scores in the win over Giddings were 25-18, 13-25, 26-24 and 25-23. Scores in the loss at La Grange were 22-25, 1625, 26-24 and 20-25.

Smithville visited Navasota on Tuesday. The Lady Tigers travel to Bellville for a 5 p.m. match Friday and host Caldwell at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14.
