Speeds shift slightly on 21 stretch

BASTROP — Speed limits on a busy section of Texas 21 through Bastrop are dropping slightly and becoming more consistent, following final council approval.

Police Chief Vicky Steffanic asked City Council last month to approve an ordinance lowering and standardizing speed limits on the highway between Jackson Street and FM 20. She said the change, developed in coordination with the Texas Department of Transportation, is aimed at improving safety and traffic flow in the area.

“The current ones are all over the place,” Steffanic said. “They go from 30 mph all the way up to 55, and they change every two to three blocks. Essentially what we’re trying to do is make it consistent.”

Unanimously approved on second reading July 22, the new limits take effect immediately. Eastbound traffic will now be limited to 50 mph, while westbound traffic will be capped at 45 mph — about 5 mph lower than current maximums along the corridor.

According to city documents, the speed adjustment is needed “due to an imminent threat to public health and safety.”
