Crosswalk to highlight shared path forward

A new downtown art and safety project will be shaped through a special community workshop next week.

The Crosswalk of Unity project, funded by a $60,000 grant from the General Motors on Main Street program, will create a custom-designed crosswalk at Veterans Memorial Park. City officials said the initiative aims to improve pedestrian safety, foster inclusivity and celebrate the city’s progress near a historically significant line of segregation in Elgin.

“The Crosswalk of Unity will be an important reminder to our residents about the challenges our community has overcome and the bright future ahead of us,” Elgin Main Street Manager Kristina Alvarez said. “We are so excited to get the project off the ground and look forward to hearing the community’s feedback.”

The project also seeks to visually enhance the downtown area and better connect neighborhoods to the Main Street district, Alvarez added.

The community input session is set for Thursday, July 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Clever Tiger, 114 Depot St. Residents are invited to attend and offer feedback on the crosswalk design and goals.

According to a release, the city was one of five recipients nationwide selected to receive a $60,000 award through the GM and Main Street America partnership.
