Former Elgin standout shines in NCAA Tournament

Former Elgin Wildcats baseball standout Braylon Owens capped off his collegiate career with a standout performance in the 2024-25 NCAA Tournament , helping lead the UTSA Roadrunners to the NCAA Super Regionals.

Owens played a pivotal role on the mound in UTSA’s 9-7 win over Texas, tossing four innings in relief while allowing just one run and striking out seven. He recorded the final out to seal the victory, sending the Roadrunners to the regional final.

UTSA then defeated Texas again, 7-4, to advance to the Super Regionals, where the team ultimately fell to UCLA in a 2-0 series loss.

A two-year varsity player at Elgin High School, Owens contributed both on the mound and at the plate. He hit .343 as a junior and .320 as a senior, finishing with a combined 46 RBIs and six home runs. On the mound, Owens posted a 2.04 ERA in 10 appearances during his senior year, helping lead Elgin to a 12-2 district record and a second-round playoff appearance. He was also a member of the Wildcats football team, playing as a defensive end.

This season marked Owens’ final year of collegiate eligibility, as he ends his career on a high note with a memorable postseason run.
