Elgin VFW Post 6115 welcomed over 30 teams and a steady crowd in support of local veterans during its annual BBQ for the Brave cook-off.
The competition, sanctioned by the International Barbeque Cookers Association, was divided into categories including chicken, ribs, brisket, beans and pork chops. Kirk Matura of Go Blue Que earned Grand Champion honors, while Shawn Trainor of Bottoms Up Smokers took the top spot in the kids division with his pork chop entry.
“We were thrilled by the turnout and grateful for the support of the community,” said Stef Finley, the post’s ways and means chairman. “Events like these help us continue our mission of supporting veterans and connecting with our neighbors.”
Judging was done by local volunteers, and the VFW Auxiliary raised funds through the sale of baked goods, lemonade and gelato.
Organizers credited strong community support and sponsorships for the event’s success. Frontier Bank and Rush Chevrolet served as lead sponsors. Additional support came from Quinn Walters, who donated trophies, and Bare Bottom Signs, which provided signage.
