BASTROP — Despite a brief hailstorm, officials and developers gathered May 5 to break ground on a new Courtyard Marriott Inn near downtown Bastrop.

The $10 million, four-story hotel will total more than 63,000 square feet, expected to be completed at 1631 Texas 71 in late 2026, according to the Bastrop Economic Development Corporation.

Local leaders said the project marks continued investment in Bastrop’s growing corridor and reflects confidence in the area’s tourism and business future.

“This new hotel signifies more than just growth—it represents our community’s resilience and commitment to progress,” City Manager Sylvia Carrillo-Trevino said.

The project has also sparked discussion among residents, some of whom voiced traffic concerns and a perceived imbalance in local development priorities. Several commenters questioned the addition of more lodging, pointing instead to a need for expanded infrastructure, youth amenities and additional retail options.

The Courtyard Marriott joins a wave of commercial and residential development in the area, which city officials say is part of a broader strategy to accommodate population growth and economic demand.

Construction is scheduled to continue through 2025.
