The city has been awarded a $60,000 grant to fund a new crosswalk aimed at improving pedestrian safety and accessibility in the downtown area.
The Crosswalk of Unity project will create a vibrant painted crosswalk at the intersection of Main Street and Avenue C, according to the city, spanning the block in front of the recently expanded Veterans Memorial Park. City officials said the project will bridge historical divides while ensuring safer access for families, children and residents with disabilities.
According to the city, the crosswalk will address safety concerns around the park—currently served by poorly marked or missing crosswalks—by offering a clearly designated and visually engaging pedestrian route.
Elgin was one of just five recipients nationwide selected for the 2025 General Motors on Main Street program, which supports transportation-focused placemaking initiatives. Administered by Main Street America, officials said the program prioritizes projects that foster sustainable mobility and people-centered public spaces.
Elgin joins communities in Kentucky, Georgia, Kansas and Wisconsin in receiving this year’s award.
