Richard Alan “Dick” Miller

Born April 9, 1939, in Amarillo, Texas, to parents Ramah and Robert Miller, Richard Miller died peacefully Friday, Jan. 23, 2026, after suffering a stroke.

Dick met the Love of his life, Nancy Sawyer Miller, at Union Seminary and married Aug. 1962. They were married for over 63 years.

He is survived by her; his two sons, Paul (Christina Mathews) and Alan (Amy Stallard); two sisters, Sue Janke and Anna Ryan; and four grandchildren, Pyre, Robert, Marcus and Caleb, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many, many friends.

Dick graduated from The University of Oklahoma and was a Rockefeller Scholar at Union Seminary. He graduated with a Master of Divinity degree and was then ordained as a Presbyterian minister in Corning, New York, where he served as a pastor for five years.

Dick returned to school and earned a Master of Library Science degree from the University of North Texas. He worked for the City of Dallas library system, serving as head of branch libraries and completing his career as director of technical services. Nancy soon followed him into the library profession. During their professional careers, Dick and Nancy volunteered through the Texas Library Association.

Dick and Nancy were active members of Northridge Presbyterian Church in Dallas and First Presbyterian Church in Austin. He served as an elder in both congregations.

Dick and Nancy retired and moved to Austin and then to Elgin. For close to 20 years, they lived next door to Alan and Amy and enjoyed helping to care for their two children, Pyre and Robert. Dick and Nancy built a life in Elgin dedicated to serving the community. He was an active member at First Presbyterian Elgin, sang in the choir for more than a decade, and served as Elder and Treasurer for FPC. Dick shared his love of reading and library knowledge through the Library Advisory Board and Friends of the Elgin Library.

His greatest joy, after helping with anything his grandchildren needed, was his work with the Elgin Community Cupboard. The food pantry benefitted from his caring, kindness and management skills, serving over 100 families weekly through dozens of volunteers.

He was honored by the Elgin Chamber of Commerce as Most Worthy Citizen in 2018.

His family shares their appreciation for the dedicated care provided by St. David’s Hospital, Elgin Nursing Home and Hospice Austin.

Memorials are requested for Elgin Community Cupboard PO Box 895, Elgin, Texas 78621, or the charity of your choice.
