Security is enhanced at Elgin Middle School today after an online rumor, although parents had reason to be relieved in the morning.

The Elgin Police Department found no credence to a threat discovered Sunday, Jan. 22. Extra security has been added out an abundance of caution.

“This has been determined to only be an unsubstantiated rumor that was started by a student,” said Principal Riza Cooper in a letter to parents and staff.

According to Cooper, staff were made aware of the social media rumor Sunday evening. EPD was notified and began to investigate into Monday, Jan. 23.

“The district will always work with local authorities to investigate matters involving our campus or our students, and take immediate action when appropriate,” said Cooper.

Elgin Independent School District uses a statewide school threat reporting tool, iWatchTexas, where anyone can report related concerns. Parents and students can access the tool at https://www.elginisd.net/domain/2946 .

For questions or concerns, contact the school at 512-281-3382.
