Smithville Independent School District will delay classes Thursday as school staff report less winter weather effects in the area compared to neighbors.

The district announced the late start Wednesday afternoon as most of central Texas was blanketed with freezing rain, sleet and other winter weather. Smithville and other school districts were closed Feb. 1.

"For the safety of all students and staff traveling to school, Smithville ISD will delay start time for Thursday, Feb. 2, by two hours," said district personel on SISD social media.

The bell schedules will be as follows:

• Brown Primary - 9:55 a.m.

• Elementary - 9:45 a.m.

• Junior High - 9:55 a.m.

• High School - 10 a.m.

Buses will pick up two hours later than usual pick up times.

Elgin, Bastrop and McDade ISDs elected to close their respected campuses all day Thursday. In response to questions from residents about why Smithville made a different decision, school staff reported that the city was fortunate to have fewer power outages than the rest of the area.

"We have confirmed no road closures or concerns in our area through state and county resources," added district staff. "The two-hour delay will give us the time needed to make sure people are not driving during freezing temps, per the forecast. We will continue to monitor the weather and road conditions and update our status, if needed."
