Improved park access along Old Austin Highway

BASTROP — City leaders approved earlier this month establishing a 0.84-acre tract of cityowned land as dedicated parkland for Bastrop’s older residents.

The plot near Grady Tuck Lane looks to create an open space for residents along Old Austin Highway. The tract neighbors a nursing home with limited outdoor area.

“If you go to the Old Austin Highway, a lot of times by the nursing homes you’ll see the seniors out there just sitting, and they’ll wave to the cars going by,” Councilwoman Cynthia Meyer said. “This is so (easily) accessible for them to go down and enjoy.”

According to the city, the added parkland will compliment a close by dog park, as well.

Meyer credited the Parks and Recreation board and its chair Deborah Jones for initiating the project and their dedication to enhancing parks in conjunction with the city’s parks master plan goals.
