The Elgin Wildcats varsity baseball team was swept in its district-opening series, losing 10-0 to Hendrickson in their first game March 11 and 10-3 in their second two days later.
Elgin managed just one hit from senior Bryce Barron in their shutout against the Hawks. The team gave up four runs in the first inning and were not able to find a solid foothold.
Hendrickson added one run in the second and four more in the fourth inning before ending the game via run rule with a final go around the bases in the fifth.
Barron took the loss on the mound, throwing 4.2 innings and giving up 10 runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts.
The Wildcats struggled defensively, committing five errors that the Hawks were quick to capitalize on.
The week’s second game did not prove much better, though Elgin was able to generate some pressure with three runs.
Elgin again dropped behind early, giving up eight points across the first two innings.
The Wildcats scored their first run of the series in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Cavenaugh Fowler to cut the lead to 8-1. Their other two runs were added in the bottom of the fifth on a hit by pitch and a walk, though the game was out of reach.
Elgin finished with five hits in the match, with sophomore Hamilton Hodges going 2-for-4 at the plate. Trey Flores got the start on the mound, pitching one inning and allowing eight runs while recording two strikeouts.
Junior pitcher Preston Maas provided some stability in relief, allowing just two runs with one strikeout.
The Wildcats fell to 4-11 overall and 0-2 in district play. They faced Weiss after press time Tuesday and will close that series at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 19.
