The Elgin boys varsity basketball team earned its first district win of the season in dramatic fashion last week, edging Pflugerville Connally 48-47 with a crucial defensive stop as time expired at home.
The Wildcats outscored the Cougars 21-13 in the first quarter behind a sharp shooting performance.

Elgin was especially effective from beyond the arc, knocking down five 3-pointers in the first eight minutes to build momentum and put Connally on its heels.
Elgin extended its lead to 25-13 early in the second before Connally answered with a run of its own. The Cougars outscored the Wildcats 12-8 over the remainder of the half, but Elgin carried a 32-24 advantage into the break despite the surge.
The Wildcats rebuilt a double-digit cushion midway through the third quarter, but Connally responded once again with a six-point run to trim the deficit to 41-36 entering the final period.
Connally’s comeback continued and the Cougars managed to tie the game at 45-45 in the last stretch. Elgin regrouped and answered when it mattered most, draining a key 3-pointer to go back in front as the clock wound down.
The Cougars converted two free throws to pull within one, but Elgin came up with a final defensive stand to seal the win and avoid a late heartbreak.
With the victory, Elgin improved to 9-12 overall and 1-2 in district play.
The Wildcats faced East View after press time Tuesday and will travel to Hendrickson Jan. 20 for a 7 p.m. meeting.
