BASTROP — The Bears endured a challenging week on the court, dropping a pair of non-district games and falling to 5-11 on the season.
Bastrop’s varsity boys basketball roster struggled offensively against both Wimberley and Canyon Lake, continuing a trend that has seen the Bears score fewer than 50 points in eight of their 16 games this season.
WIMBERLEY
Bastrop was unable to generate consistent threats in its 71-37 loss to the Texans Dec. 9.
The Bears shot 29% from the field against an aggressive Wimberley defense.
Sophomore point guard Jamarion Aldridge-Hopes paced the Bears with 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting, providing one of the few bright spots on the offensive end.
Bastrop didn’t have an answer for Wimberley’s pressure, committing 18 turnovers that repeatedly gifted fast-break opportunities. Those miscues proved costly as the Texans built momentum early and never allowed the Bears to settle into a rhythm.
Wimberley senior guard Paul Gumbert-Mendoza delivered a dominant performance with 31 points on 12-of-18 shooting. His ability to score both in transition and the half court helped his team pull away.
Senior forward Brent Carter led Bastrop on the glass with 10 rebounds, where the Bears were outpaced 41-26 overall. Senior Ryden Alvarez finished as the team’s second leading scorer with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting.
CANYON LAKE
Bastrop showed improvement defensively in a 45-37 loss to the Hawks Dec. 12, but familiar weak points limited attack opportunities.
The Bears shot 37% from the field and found difficulties capitalizing on key possessions down the stretch.
Trailing 13-7 after the first quarter, Bastrop showed life and chipped away at the deficit to enter the game’s final minutes down by a single point, 31-30. Canyon Lake, however, closed the game with a decisive 14-7 run to secure the win.
Aldridge-Hopes once again led Bastrop in scoring, finishing with 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting to emerge as a consistent offensive contributor. Alvarez added six points on 1-of-4 shooting.
Bastrop rebounded and found offensive consistency in a 71-45 victory over Taylor last Tuesday before they traveled to face Austin Travis Friday, Dec. 19, after press time.
