A longtime Bastrop County political figure has stepped aside from party leade r ship to prepare for a familiar countywide office race.
Dock Jackson resigned as chairman of the Bastrop County Democratic Party Dec. 3 and will run for Bastrop County judge on the March primary ballot. The seat is currently held by incumbent Republican candidate Gregory Klaus.

The county judge oversees local government operations and presides over the Commissioners Court.
“It has been an honor to serve Bastrop County as Democratic chairman,” Jackson said in a statement. “During my time in office, I’ve witnessed our local Democrats and Republicans come together in unprecedented ways, building bonds and unity that will echo through upcoming and future elections.”
Jackson previously sought the position in 2022, trailing Klaus in the general election with 32% of the votes, according to county records.
He has remained active in local government and politics for decades, serving more than 30 years on the Bastrop City Council and as assistant county judge.
Michele Rutherford, who had been serving as both precinct chair and vice chair of the county party, will complete Jackson’s term as county chair.
“I wish Ms. Rutherford all the best as she continues our shared goals, mission and vision for a safer, stronger Bastrop County,” Jackson said.
Candidate filings closed Dec. 8, with the final list of candidates for the March primary expected to be certified in the coming days.
