BASTROP — Standout Bears quarterback Weston Nielsen announced his commitment to Arizona State University live on the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football YouTube channel over the weekend.
The Bastrop High School junior chose the Sun Devils Dec. 13 over 18 other Division I programs, including top recruiters like Texas A&M, University of Oregon and Baylor University. Nielsen is ranked thirteenth in the nation for 2027 class quarterbacks, according to 247Sports, establishing himself as one of the state’s top passers with consistency and production.
“I want to thank the coaches at Arizona State, especially coach Marcus Arroyo and coach Kenny Dillingham,” Nielsen said. “From the first visit, those two coaches made ASU feel like home. I feel like I belong there. From my last visit, I feel like I could lead this program as long as I have those two leading me.”
Nielsen finished his junior season with 3,053 passing yards and 44 touchdowns while adding 373 rushing yards and five scores on the ground. He led Bastrop to an 11-2 overall record with a 6-1 mark in district play and third-round Class 5A Division II playoff appearance, where the Bears fell to Randle 83-20.
“Nielsen has that gunslinger’s mentality,” Greg Powers said in the announcement video, livestreamed to an audience of more than 1,400. “He works well outside the pocket — he’s tough in the pocket — and really savvy. He’s not afraid to put the ball into tight windows.”
He joins an Arizona State program led by head coach Kenny Dillingham, an of fensive- minded leader who previously coached Jordan Travis at Florida State and Bo Nix at Oregon.
Nielsen will return for his final season as a Bear with high expectations before heading to the collegiate level.
