Bastrop’s varsity boys basketball team cruised past county competition last week, topping Smithville 70-21 behind a balanced offensive attack and a stifling defensive performance.
The Bears controlled the game from the opening tip Nov. 25. Their roster dominated the glass with 34 rebounds and applied relentless pressure to earn 29 steals.
Bastrop junior Ryden Alvarez led all scorers with 17 points, setting the tone early with energy on both ends of the floor. He also paced the Bears defensively with six steals, frequently turning takeaways into transition points.
Junior forward Preston Alexander added 15 points and five rebounds, giving Bastrop another strong inside presence.
Smithville recorded under 25% shooting from the field. The Tigers struggled to match Bastrop’s physicality on the court and repeatedly let fast-break opportunities through, converted to easy baskets.
The Bears built a commanding lead by halftime and built upon it with disciplined, coordinated play and unselfish ball movement.
With the win, the Bears improved to 2-6 on the season, while the Tigers dropped to 0-3.
Bastrop will look to carry this momentum into the Schulenburg Tournament Dec. 4, while Smithville is set to compete in the Bumble Bee Classic the same day.
