Continued success for Cedar Creek High School artist

Cedar Creek High School junior Lorelei Smith is earning a place in Texas art circles after securing statewide recognition for the second year in a row.

Smith, an AP Art student, placed sixth in the high school 2-D division with her piece “Spirit of the Southwest” at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Art Contest. The 14-by-18-inch watercolor and colored pencil painting of a lone coyote in the Texas sun earned her a $1,000 scholarship and stood out among more than 1,800 entries statewide.

The award continues a streak of success for Smith, who won first place last year with her longhorn drawing “Majesty in the Meadow.” Another piece, “Untamed Storm,” won Smith a $10,000 scholarship and ribbons for Class Champion and Museum Choice at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Western Art Competition in December.

Her latest artwork will be displayed Jan. 16 to Feb. 7 at the Amon G. Carter Jr. Exhibits Hall in Fort Worth.

“Spirit of the Southwest” earns sixth place out of more than 1,800 entries from student artists statewide.

The Cedar Creek High School student took home gold with “Majesty in the Meadow” last year.
